Dr. Zimbardo and his book The Lucifer Effect

Zimbardo is perhaps best known as the creator of the Stanford Prison Experiment. It is a landmark study, in which a group of college-student volunteers was randomly divided into “guards” and “inmates” and then placed in a mock prison environment. Within a week the study was abandoned, as ordinary college students were transformed into either brutal, sadistic guards or emotionally broken prisoners.
Zimbardo knows how easy it is for nice people to turn bad. In this talk, he shares insights and graphic unseen photos from the Abu Ghraib trials. Then he talks about the flip side: how easy it is to be a hero, and how we can rise to the challenge.




In his new book The Lucifer Effect Zimbardo explains how–and the myriad reasons why–we are all susceptible to the lure of “the dark side.” What makes good people do bad things? How can moral people be seduced to act immorally? Where is the line separating good from evil, and who is in danger of crossing it? Drawing on examples from history as well as his own trailblazing research, Zimbardo details how situational forces and group dynamics can work in concert to make monsters out of decent men and women.

Vilayanur Ramachandran - the brain expert

10th Annual Leadership Institute and Career Fair (New York)

The Annual Leadership Institute & Career Fair is the premier recruitment conference for public HBCU students. One of the main components of the Leadership Institute is the Career Fair, where students meet with over 60 companies and government agencies offering job and internship opportunities. 

The school will pay for your trip to New York if you get selected for the participation based on your interview (currently there is no quota, so every eligible student may come). The interviews will be held on September 20, 2010 on campus, Bldg 39, Room 120.

Resumes must be submitted and interviews must be scheduled by noon on Friday September 17, 2010.

Time to Activate Your Library Account

Your student ID is your library card. In order to start using the library resources you need to activate you library account. You can do it only in person, at the library (building 41, 5th floor). The librarian must see your student ID to activate your account (did you get a new ID card?). After it is done you are free to use any of the resources the library has to offer. Which are the following:
1) Online access to ALADIN.
First and foremost ALADIN gives you the access to the online databases (all the articles that you are going to need during the semester for your assignments and self-study can be found through ALADIN). Please note, the articles and other publications for counseling students are in the Social Science section and most of them are in the database called PsycINFO. Once you are in this database, you may use the search facility to find information on topics that you are interested in.
2) Borrowing books.
With activated library account you will be able to borrow books from the library. If the library does not have the book you need, they will request it from the consortium which consists of 14 universities in the tri-state area. It usually takes up to 3 business days to get almost anything you want.
3) Studying at the library.
If you like studying at the library but you don't live close to the UDC, you may go to any library of the consortium (George Washington University library, American University library, Georgetown University library, etc.). In order to enter any of those libraries you need to show your student ID and your drivers license. There you may browse and borrow books just like at the UDC library.

All returning students must get new student IDs

Starting from this semester all returning students must get new student IDs (new students already have their new IDs). To do that you need to go to the 4.0 Lounge (building 38, B level). You should bring two things: your old student ID and a print out from Student Accounts (building 39, room A09A) or from TMS that proves that you have made the first tuition payment (at least $200).
If you know your pin number, you do not have to go to the Student Accounts  - you can access your balance yourself. Here is how you do it:
1) Go to the http://web4students.udc.edu/
2) Click "Enter Student Services";
3) Log in using your ID number and a pin;
3) Go to "Student Records" and then to "Account Summary";
4) Print out the page with current balance.
Keep in mind that the IDs are issued till 4 pm on week days, so come early. Also, prepare to have your photograph taken.
